Texas Notary Public Law Update

Updated Friday, March 22, 2013   In an effort to keep our Texas notaries aware of possible legislative changes, Notary Public Underwriters Agency of Texas has been tracking two companion bills in the Texas Legislature. These bills would make notary education mandatory for new and renewing notary applicants.   House Bill 1954 and Senate Bill 1037 are similar bills both entitled "An act relating to the education requirements for a notary public; authorizing a fee." House Bill 1954 was introduced on February 27, 2013 by Representative Senfronia Thompson - Harris County (D). The Licensing and Administrative Procedures Committee has been assigned the bill. Senate Bill 1037 was introduced by Senator Jose Rodriquez - El Paso (D) on March 4, 2013 and has not been assigned to a committee as of this posting.   Notary Public Underwriters Agency of Texas has always valued notary education and finds it necessary for notaries to perform their duties with confidence. However, we want to be sure that these bills, if passed, are implemented in a cost effective manner and that notary education is readily available to all Texas notaries. We want to be the voice of our notaries and will be sure to notify you as these bills move through the Texas legislative process.
